Your Fuengirola Area Guide

Fuengirola
The fact that it is only 25km from Málaga airport is amongst one of the reasons for Fuengirola’s popularity with overseas buyers. It is easily accessible by road, rail and bus, and its ever-expanding amenities have contributed to it becoming the buzzing, cosmopolitan town that it is today with a growing choice of prime Fuengirola Real Estate.
Whilst it may have been primarily associated with package holidays in decades past, the arrival of up-market tapas bars, cafés and restaurants, alongside a swathe of designer boutiques, has repositioned Fuengirola in the eyes of many. Refurbishments, such as the redesign of its main square, the Plaza de la Constitución is just one of the contributions to its modernisation, yet it retains its ‘old world’ feeling, as a walk through its narrow streets off the main square will surely demonstrate.
One of the town’s main attractions is its seven-kilometre beach that stretches from Sohail castle to Torreblanca, and it is renowned for its shopping, which has been expanded by the nearby Miramar shopping mall, which also has a cinema.
Properties in central Fuengirola are always immensely popular, whether for permanent residency, or for holiday, or holiday rentals and are diverse in style and price range. In fact you can see some examples on our website as we also have a estate agents office in Fuengirola.
Los Boliches
Formerly an old fishing village that over the years has become integrated with Fuengirola, this quieter spot has earned a reputation as an ideal residential environment. It has a long, sandy beach with several chiringuitos/beach bars providing sun beds, and there is no shortage of restaurants in the streets just off the promenade. It also has a train station, and the train to the airport runs every twenty minutes from six in the morning until midnight, making it a great location for frequent travellers. There is also a wide choice of types of properties for sale at Los Boliches, meaning there is something for everyone here.
Torreblanca
Like Los Boliches, Torreblanca is another Fuengirola suburb with a train station connected to the airport. Its hillside location means that its residents enjoy some wonderful views, and the road up through the suburb is lined with impressive villas. The area has retained its traditional Andalucian style in many parts, which is a plus for many buyers, and it is favoured by many for its tranquillity and its proximity to good beaches, whether for a holiday or permanent residence. Furthermore, there are shops and facilities close by, and it is a very short drive to Los Boliches, or the town centre for shopping.
Mijas Costa
Mijas Costa is adjacent to Fuengirola and covers a twelve-kilometre stretch of the coast, and includes the increasingly popular La Cala de Mijas and Calahonda. Its two most popular urbanisations are Riviera del Sol and Sitio de Calahonda, and properties range from studio apartments to magnificent villas with sea and mountain views. Golf is particularly well catered for in Mijas, with the most popular being Los Lagos and Cerrado de Aguila.
Thanks to its great beaches, water sport activities are plentiful here, and include jet skis, waterskiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, and more. There is no shortage of restaurants and shops in this area, and there are a number of medical centres catering for English-speaking residents.
La Cala de Mijas
This area deserves a special mention, as it sits in the centre of Mijas Costa. There are schools, a health centre, post office, shops, gyms and a cultural centre, as well as many excellent bars and restaurants, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays there is a lively market offering everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to local crafts, clothes, ceramics and pottery, flowers and plants. La Cala has also become famed for its restaurants with the opening of Olivia’s La Cala, owned by Elliott Wright, who is associated with TOWIE. TV celebrity chef, Steve Saunders’ Little Geranium restaurant has also raised the dining game in La Cala, and there is El Torrejon and El Jinete for those looking for a more Spanish flavoured menu and surroundings.
